This is a public lecture by Manuel Meléndez-Sánchez, a researcher at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. He will discuss the highly effective but very controversial crime fighting policies adopted by the government of El Salvador to address that country's major problems with gangs and criminal violence.

It's open to the public and there will be a Q&A period toward the end.

Music Monday of the Ozarks will meet November 3 at the Springfield Elks Lodge for a presentation from several members of the Caduceus Orchestra, a group of musicians who are also doctors.

The Ozarks Genealogical Society will meet November 3 for a presentation on Finding Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood: The Challenge of Metes and Bounds Land Records.

In this session, OGS member Michelle Dickens, Certified Genealogist, will unravel the often-mysterious metes and bounds land surveying system, a foundational method used to describe land parcels in colonial and early American records. Unlike the later rectangular survey system, metes and bounds relied on physical landmarks, compass bearings, and distances—often creating irregular, winding property shapes. Understanding this system is essential for genealogists tracing land ownership, inheritance patterns, and familial connections.

A discussion of land-platting tools and software will be included along with strategies for locating the plats within a given area. Michelle will present in person.

Citizens Memorial Hospice will offer an eight-week bereavement support group series beginning Tuesday, September 16, at 10 am. 

The support group is open to anyone grieving the loss of a loved one and is free to attend. Sessions will be held in CMH Community Room 2 at Grand Missouri Bank, 1630 S Killingsworth Ave, in Bolivar.

The support group is designed to educate participants about grief and loss, help them develop coping and adapting skills, and provide emotional support.

The sessions will be led by CMH Hospice chaplains Austin McCrickard and Dustin Preston, along with counselors Terry Warren, LMSW; Angel Townsend, MSW; Kimberly Lannan, MSW; and hospice coordinator Connie Duryee.

Topics will include understanding the grief experience, managing complex emotions, coping with changes, preparing for holidays and special occasions, and finding meaning after loss.
