The Greene County Suicide Prevention Network and the Christian County Suicide Prevention Network will be hosting the Suicide Awareness Walk for a Life, a community-wide event to support individuals who have experienced a mental health challenge or have lost a loved one to suicide. The event will take place on September 23rd from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at OTC Richwood Valley Campus (3369 West Jackson St. Nixa, MO 65714).
In Missouri, over 1,200 died by suicide in 2022 (CDC, 2022). Missouri has the 19th highest suicide rate in the nation (CDC, 2021) and the suicide rates are consistently higher than those in the United States.
This event unites those who have been impacted by suicide. The purpose of this event is to help support the mission of the Greene and Christian County Suicide Prevention Networks in providing awareness and hope to reduce suicide in Southwest Missouri. There will be a Remembrance Wall and participants are encouraged to bring a photograph of someone they know who died by suicide to honor their memory. There is no registration and no cost of admission to this event. Light refreshments will be served, and resource tables will be present, providing information about suicide prevention and mental health promotion.

The Victim Center in Springfield is looking for people to serve as volunteer victim advocates to provide crisis intervention services to violent or sexual crime victims. This is an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of people in our community who are experiencing their darkest hour.
Volunteer Victim Advocates are essential for maintaining The Victim Center’s 24-hour crisis hotline. The Victim Center serves victims of violent and sexual crimes -- all ages and genders -- including assault, family violence, child abuse/neglect, rape, homicide, adult survivors (people who were victimized as children), robbery, alcohol crashes, and secondary crime victims of all types.
The role of volunteer advocates is to provide crisis intervention by phone. Volunteer Victim Advocates choose two-to-four call shifts per month and attend a monthly meeting for training and support. Volunteers take calls from their own homes when they are on call and have 24-hour access to back-up support, and their personal information is protected.
To volunteer, one must be 21 years old (or very close to it), pass a national background and reference check, and have a phone. There are numerous opportunities to participate in volunteer victim advocate training. Our training schedule is as follows:
Candidates must complete an interview and application process before participation in training. Please contact Adam Bollar, Director of Crisis Intervention, at volunteerprogram@thevictimcenter.org or call 417-863-7273 for more information.
