Officer Aaron Pearson Making “Amazing progress,” Chief Says

Springfield Police Department

The Springfield police officer who was shot in the head last month is now out of the Intensive Care Unit and making “amazing progress.”

Police Chief Paul Williams confirmed this week that Officer Aaron Pearson is now able to walk with the aid of a walker and recognize his family members.

“We are all encouraged by, and thankful for, the significant amount of improvement Aaron has made in a such a short period of time,” Williams said in a statement. “He, Amanda, and their entire family remain in our thoughts and prayers.”

Pearson was shot early on the morning of January 26. A week ago, his wife Amanda said her husband was “making gains that we thought maybe would never happen.”

Family and officials have noted from the start that Pearson’s recovery will be a long one, but have been encouraged by the outpouring of community support. While Pearson’s salary and medical bills are paid for through the city of Springfield’s workers’ compensation plan, funds continue to come in from the community for the officer’s long-term care.

Meanwhile, Joshua Hagood, the 32-year-old charged in connection to Pearson’s shooting, remains in the Greene County Jail without bond.
