The Springfield Regional Arts Council has announced the 2014 round of Ozzie Award recipients. Since 1985, the Arts Council has given this prestigious award to those who embody the pioneering creative spirit of the Southwest Missouri arts scene. Each year, the community nominates performers, facilitators, benefactors, individuals, or organizations and a five-member selection committee chooses those which best promote, personify, and support artistic achievement. This year’s recipients are:
·         The late Phil Broyles (1948-2014) – Legacy Award
As Public Works Director, Mr. Broyles showed outstanding support for the arts through his significant behind-the-scenes work on The Creamery Arts Center and public art in Springfield.
·         The late Mrs. Juanita K. Hammons (1917-2014) – Legacy Award
Mrs. Hammons was one of the most prominent patrons for the arts in Missouri, well-known as the namesake of MSU’s performing arts center, and host of the annual fundraiser, Salute to the Arts.
·         Obelisk Home – Organization Award
Not only does Obelisk Home support local artists, they partner with them for philanthropic endeavors that support our local community and those in need.
·         Prof. Tom Parker – Individual Award
Prof. Parker, an artist, teacher, and musician, has impacted the lives of thousands in and around the Springfield area and created the Masters in Studio Art and Theory program at Drury University.
·         Mr. Lou Whitney – Individual Award
Referred to as “father of the ‘Springfield Sound’” and “Springfield master musician,” Mr. Whitney has influenced the national and local music scenes for more than 40 years as musician and producer.
·         Mr. and Mrs. John and Beth Raidel – Philanthropy Award
For more than 30 years, Mr. and Mrs. Raidel have provided time and financial support to a wide variety of area arts organizations and events helping to sustain a thriving arts community.
The winners will be honored during the annual Flights of Fancy arts gala, held at the Springfield-Branson National Airport. The 5th Annual Flights of Fancy featuring the 2014 Ozzie Awards will begin with a cocktail reception at 5:30pm on Saturday, September 6, 2014. This popular event also features performances by local arts organizations and food provided by Touch and Aviary.
