The Springfield area started out at 66 degrees Tuesday morning, but by late afternoon, temperatures will be in the low 40's.

A flood watch is in effect through late tonight, and some areas, including Springfield, are under a winter weather advisory from 6 tonight until 10 tomorrow morning.

"We are expecting some periods of moderate to heavy rainfall through the day today as a cold front slowly pushes to the southeast across the area," said Gene Hatch, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Springfield.  According to Hatch,  the area could get one to three inches of rain today.

Freezing rain could fall tonight behind the cold front as it moves to the southeast.

"There are still some questions as far as how quickly the cold air can get into the area, and how long the rain remains in the area," Hatch said, "so expectations  right now are if everything occurs in the right order, some locations could see potentially up to a tenth of an inch of ice."

Hatch said that will mostly be on elevated surfaces.

Rain chances will continue through the week with another possibility of freezing rain Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

By Saturday morning, Hatch says some areas will see a total rainfall for the week of three to six inches, and flooding will be possible.
