Master Gardeners of Greene County

The Lawn and Garden Show is Friday (2/22) and Saturday (2/23) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday (2/24) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds.  The event will feature educational seminars by Master Gardeners as well as a variety of vendors.  Admission is $5, and kids six and younger get in free. 

The program, “Discover Nature: Schoolcraft at Smallin Cave: Then and Now,” will be held Friday night (2/22) at 7 at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center.  Archaeologist Eric Fuller will portray Henry Rowe Schoolcraft and talk about his exploration of Smallin Cave and the Ozarks 200 years ago.  Registration is required. 

The Branson Regional Arts Council presents Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” through March 3 at the Historic Owen Theatre, 205 S. Commercial in Branson. 

“Science Sprouts: Sporty Sprouts” will be held Friday (2/22) at 10 a.m. at the Discovery Center of Springfield, 438 E. St. Louis.  It’s for kids six and younger.  Learn the science of sports and how to be a healthy athlete. 

Adults are invited to the program, “File Management,” Friday morning (2/22) at 10 at the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch Library. 

A Songwriting Workshop for kids in grades six through 12 will be held Friday night (2/22) from 6 to 8 at the Library Center. 

The Coronation Ball will be held Friday night (2/22) at 6 at the Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center, 205 W. Van Buren in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.  It’s part of the city’s celebration of Mardi Gras. 

Springfield Contemporary Theatre presents “Skeleton Crew” through March 3 at 302 E. Pershing.  The play follows co-workers at a Detroit auto stamping plant in 2008 who will have to make tough choices if their plant goes under. 

The Missouri State University Theatre and Dance Department presents “Bare-the Musical” through March 6 in the Craig Hall Balcony Theatre. 

The exhibit, “Mining Memories and Motive Engines: The Artwork of Jim Bray,” is at the Joplin History and Mineral Museum through February 29. 

Heartland Opera Theatre will present Puccini’s “La Boheme” Friday through Sunday (2/22-2/24) at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School, 3401 Newman Rd. in Joplin.  

The Staff Picks Series at the Moxie, 305 S. Campbell in Springfield, will feature the 2015 film,“Carol,” Friday night (2/22) at 7:45 and Saturday (2/23) at 9:15 p.m. 

Oscar Animated Shorts will be held Friday (2/22) at 3:15 and Saturday (2/23) at 11:45 a.m. at the Moxie Cinema, 305 S. Campbell in Springfield.  See the Short Films (animated) that have been nominated for the Oscars. 

Oscar Documentary Shorts will be shown Friday (2/22) at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday (2/23) at 6 p.m. and Sunday (2/24) at noon at the Moxie Cinema, 305 S. Campbell in Springfield. 

The Sertoma Clubs of Springfield will host a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament Friday (2/22) at 5 p.m. and the Sertoma Chili Cook-Off along with the KSMU Acoustic Stage Saturday (2/23) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Learn more here

The Sankofa: Black History Month Reception 2019 will be held Saturday (2/23) at 5 p.m. in the Plaster Student Union Theater and Ballroom.  The event will include a program focused on celebrating black history and culture, a performance by the Langston Hughes Project and dinner.  The cost is $10, and free for students. 

The program,“Picky Eaters and Problem Feeders,” will be held Saturday (2/23) at 9:30 a.m.  Adults are invited to the program that will present possible solutions for those who struggle to get their children to eat at mealtime.  Registration is required, and childcare will be provided. 

Drury Humanities will present the film, “Selma,” Saturday (2/23) at 1 p.m. at The Moxie Cinema, 305 S. Campbell in Springfield, including a post show discussion of the film.  Admission is $5 and free for Moxie members. 

Learn how to keep your identity safe and what warning signs to look for during the program,“Ask the Experts: Identity Theft Protection,” Saturday (2/23) at 10 a.m. at the Midtown Carnegie Branch Library. 

Moxie Mornings is Saturday morning (2/23) at 10 at the Moxie, 305 S. Campbell in Springfield.  Kids two to six-years-old will watch an innovative short film and take part in hands-on art activities. 

Vulture Venture is Saturday (2/23) from noon to 5 at the Shepherd of the Hills Conservation Center, 483 Hatchery Rd. in Branson.  There will be live vulture presentations on the hour from noon to 4, and you’ll be able to go outside and look for vultures and take part in other activities. 

The Missouri River Bird Observatory will band birds Saturday (2/23) from 1 to 4 at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center, and the public is invited to stop by and watch.  Learn more here

The Republic Branch Library will offer a variety of games and activities for kids in preschool through fifth grade Saturday morning (2/23) at 10.  Learn more here

The Eureka Gras Night Parade starts Saturday night (2/23) at 6 in downtown Eureka Springs, Arkansas. 

The sixth annual Black Light Ball will be held Saturday night (2/23) at 7 at 10 Mountain Street in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.  It’s part of the city’s celebration of Mardi Gras. 

Kids in grades K-six are invited to “Art Exploration” Saturday (2/23) at 2 at the Library Station. 

“Saturday Movie Night” is Saturday night (2/23) at 6 at the Library Center.  Anyone 13 and older is invited to watch “Ocean’s 8,” rated PG-13. 

The Springfield-Drury Civic Orchestra will present Sibelius and the Omnifenix Friday night (2/22) at 7:30 at the Gillioz, 325 Park Central East.  Admission is $15, $6 for students and free for kids 11 and under. 

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board will host a Daddy/Daughter Dance Saturday (2/22) at 6 p.m. at the Northview Center at Doling Park.  Tickets include a catered dinner. 

The program, “Interracial Understanding,”will be held Saturday and Sunday (2/23-2/24) at 1 at George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond.  Learn about Carver’s rise to fame and his efforts for interracial understanding after his 1921 appearance before the House Ways and Means Committee. 

Try Hockey for Free Day is Saturday (2/23) at 1 at Jordan Valley Ice Park.  No skating experience is needed.  Coaches will be available, and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board will provide equipment.  Registration is required. 

The Springfield Conservation Nature Center’s Conservation TEENS will build birdhouses Saturday (2/23) at 10 a.m.  The club is for anyone 12 to 17-years-old.  Registration is required. 

The Missouri State University Chorale will present the concert, “To the Heavens,” Sunday night (2/24) at 5:30 at Immaculate Conception Church, 3555 S. Fremont in Springfield. 

Springfield Ballet will hold a free workshop for boys seven to 12-years-old wanting to try dance or to increase their agility and flexibility Sunday afternoon (2/24) at 2.  It will be at 411 N. Sherman Parkway in Springfield. 

Oscar Live Action Shorts will be shown at the Moxie Cinema, 305 S. Campbell in Springfield, Sunday morning (2/24) at 11. 

The Essentials Film Series at the Moxie Cinema, 305 S. Campbell in Springfield, will feature the 2006 film, “Marie Antoinette,” Sunday (2/24) at 4:30.  The series showcases the essential films everyone should see on the big screen. 

A “Booktalk” will be held Sunday (2/24) at 2 at the Library Station.  Be prepared to convince others why they should read the book title of your choice and find out about books you might want to read.
