Governor Mike Parson said the Missouri National Guard has begun scaling back its involvement at mass vaccination sites. The drawdown is set to be completed by June 1, according to his office.
Parson said in a news release that, when the vaccine was first available earlier this year, demand far outweighed vaccine supply, but now they’re seeing the reverse of that. He said the need for large scale vaccination events has lessened. Missouri’s Dashboard shows that 38 percent of Missourians 18 and older are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Events supported by the National Guard resulted in more than 382,000 vaccines administered—nearly 10 percent of all vaccines put in arms across the state, according to the governor’s office.
Targeted Vaccination Teams, comprised of guard members, will continue working in St. Louis and Kansas City. And guard members will also continue to help staff the Department of Health and Senior Services’ COVID-19 Hotline and provide support for Missouri food banks and food pantries.
