The Missouri Community College Association honored the late Special Agent Sgt. Joseph M. Peters with its Distinguished Alumni Award at a ceremony in Branson Thursday.

The Sgt. Peters earned a certificate in electronic media production from Ozarks Technical Community College and went on to serve in the US Army in the Criminal Investigations Division.  He was assigned to the Fifth Military Police Battalion in Vincennes, Italy.

On October 6, 2013, Peters was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on a mission in Afghanistan.  It was his third deployment to the Middle East.

Sgt. Peters was posthumously awarded numerous medals including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.  He is survived by his wife, Ashley and their son, Gabriel, and by his parents, Dennis and Debbie, who accepted the award on their son's behalf at the ceremony.
