The Missouri Hotel, an emergency shelter along Commercial Street in north Springfield since the 1980s, is officially closing today.

The Kitchen, Inc. said in a news release Thursday that the hotel’s last families were moving out and into the community. Officials had previously planned to close the facility in February.

For the past two years, there has been an average of 50 individuals in emergency shelter nightly at the hotel.

The Kitchen is now offering emergency shelter to these individuals through apartments such as the KIND Place and the Ollis Building, which offer rooms three times the size of a room at the hotel. It’s part of an expansion of the Housing First and Rapid Re-housing programs, which officials feel is a better approach to ending homelessness in the community.
