Tuesday could be the start of many frigid weather days over the next several months that prompts the opening of the Salvation Army’s Emergency Overnight Warming Center.

The service is available when the National Weather Service predicts the wind chill will reach 14° F or below. Tonight, wind chill values are predicted to drop to as low as 9 degrees.

“We want everyone to have a safe place to get out of the cold and find relief,” said Jeff Smith, Social Services Director. “Our doors are always open during the day, but with the extreme cold temperatures, we will remain open throughout the night in order to ensure area residents are safe.”

The Warming Center will be open tonight from 7 pm. To 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. The center is located at 1707 West Chestnut Expressway.

Last year, The Salvation Army says it served 509 unduplicated individuals over 52 days.

The Salvation Army is also in need of volunteers to assist with the Warming Center. More information is available by calling Jeff Smith at 417-862-5509 ext. 105.
