Looking to Volunteer? Victory Mission Seeks Drivers to Transport Homeless

Acquired from public domain

As the temperatures drop, many look forward to the holiday season; but for the homeless community in Springfield, November brings unbearably cold nights.

Victory Mission is partnering with East Sunshine Church, the area’s only overnight seasonal shelter in the community, to provide men with a place to sleep and escape the elements.

Janelle Reed, outreach manager at Victory Mission, says it could be an especially busy winter.

“This year, we expecting a lot more people because of Salvation Army’s decision to not host a cold weather shelter.”

She says Victory Mission is looking for volunteers to drive buses to transport those seeking shelter from Victory Square, a men’s shelter in north Springfield, to East Sunshine Church on cold nights when the Victory Square shelter gets full.

Volunteers must be 18 years or older, have a Class E driver's license, and pass a background check. Reed also said the organization does have payment opportunities for those who’d like to drive for them consistently.
