MSU Football Coach's Contract Won't be Renewed

Missouri State University says it won't renew head football coach Terry Allen's contract.

According to a news release from MSU, Allen, who has been the Bears' head coach since 2006, compiled a 37-64 record in his nine seasons in Springfield. His current contract is set to expire at the end of January.

"We thoroughly evaluate our programs after each season and keep an eye on various factors throughout the year," said MSU athletic director Kyle Moats. "After reviewing our football program, I consulted President (Clif) Smart and made my recommendation to make a change after this season. He supported that recommendation, which is obviously never an easy one to make."

Moats said Coach Allen represented the football program well during his tenure and has been a vital part of the campus community.

Moats said the University will move quickly to hire a new coach. A committee comprised of Ryan DeBoef, Casey Hunt, Tom Strong, Fred Harle and Jim Hutter will be charged with pairing down the field of potential candidates for Smart and Moats to interview.

Allen was announced as Missouri State's 19th head football coach on Dec. 20, 2005. The Bears had winning seasons in 2007 and 2009 under Allen, both 6-5 campaigns, and tied for second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in 2013 and third in 2010, according to the news release.  Allen's 37 victories rank fifth in Missouri State history, and his nine-year coaching stint matches the program's third-longest.

Moats also noted that the contracts of Allen's assistant coaches and staff will expire at the end of December.
