One person has so far submitted an application ahead of a March 27 deadline to fill a Springfield City Council vacancy.

The city said Tuesday that Joseph Hoffman is the lone citizen to submit materials for the Zone 1 seat. Officials began soliciting applications for the position last month following the exit of Jeff Seifried, who was no longer eligible to serve after moving to Branson.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. March 27 to the Springfield City Clerk’s office in the Busch Municipal Building, 840 Boonville. Council is expected to review, select finalists and conduct interviews in mid- to late April. The candidate selected will be sworn in immediately.

Interested residents must be a qualified and registered voter of the city, a resident for at least two years immediately prior to election, and a resident of Zone 1 for at least one year. The resident cannot be a candidate or nominee for any other paid public office, or be employed by the city of Springfield or any of its departments (except for public safety), boards, or agencies during or for one year after serving on the Council. The city asks public safety employees should contact the City Attorney's Office for clarification of their ability to apply.
