A type of animal that used to be at Dickerson Park Zoo years ago has returned to Springfield.

Joey Powell, spokesperson for the zoo, says the zoo now has two capybaras, which are the largest rodents in the world.  The mammals are native to Central and South America.

The former hippo exhibit is being remodeled to house two of them—Capy and Tennille.  According to a news release, “the two are getting acquainted and love will keep them together.”

Zookeepers hope to have them on exhibit by this weekend.

Dickerson Park Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
