ST. LOUIS (AP) — Four St. Louis police officers were shot and wounded after peaceful protests over the death of George Floyd turned violent overnight, and a retired police captain was shot to death by looters at a pawn shop.
The governor blamed the violence on “criminals” and “thugs.” Separately, a man was gravely injured in an exchange of gunfire with police in a northern suburb. After nightfall, protesters smashed windows, looted businesses and set fires.
The Kansas City Star reports that Mayor Quinton Lucas joined a downtown Kansas City protest but that police declared the gathering unlawful after he left.
