Local Residents Volunteer With Red Cross to Help Flood Victims in MO

Two volunteers with the Southern Missouri Red Cross Chapter in Springfield are in Northern Missouri helping victims of the Missouri River flooding.

Ethel Styron and Jim Gentle arrived in St. Joseph Friday and were assigned to the Red Cross shelter at the First Christian Church in Mound City.  That’s where residents of nearby Craig, who were forced out of their homes by high water, are staying.

Gentle says he volunteers because he enjoys helping people.  Styron volunteers because her family’s home caught fire when she was in high school and she knows what it’s like to be on the receiving end after a disaster.

The Red Cross accepts monetary donations to help it respond to and help people recover from disasters.  To give, call 1-800-RED CROSS or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.  You can also donate to your local American Red Cross office for Disaster Relief.

Volunteers are also needed, and you can sign up to help at redcross.org.
