Springfield Public Works Crews Prepare for Snow While Springfield Police Offer Safe Driving Tips

Winter precipitation is falling in the Ozarks, and the City of Springfield Public Works crews started getting ready before it began.  According to the city, crews started pre-treating bridges and hills Monday morning on arterial and priority routes.  More than 9,000 tons of salt is waiting to be used on the roads this winter, and vehicles are inspected and ready to go.

But Springfield Police say drivers have a responsibility for their safety and the safety of others by knowing how to drive in winter weather.

Don’t drive if you don’t have to.  If you must go out, Springfield police say to allow extra time to get to where you’re going and make sure your car is ready for winter conditions.  You should also leave plenty of space between you and the car in front of you.  Brake gently to avoid skidding; use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills; don’t use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads; and be especially careful on bridges and overpasses, which freeze first.

Safety tips can be found here.
