Josh Hawley addresses the crowd at President Trump's rally in Springfield.

At an energetic rally Friday night in Springfield, President Donald Trump called Attorney General Josh Hawley the next United States senator from Missouri.

Trump supporters, like Patti Knight, shared the enthusiasm for Hawley, who’s running against the incumbent, Claire McCaskill, a Democrat.

“I’m excited that he’s got a wonderful, wonderful law background. So he knows the rules and he can help enforce the rules because I think that’s what we are going to need a lot,” Knight said.

During Trump’s “Promises Made, Promises Kept” rally, the president spoke of Hawley as “a special man, a special talent” while inviting him to the stage.

Outside JQH Arena, the venue of Trump’s rally, protestors hoisted vivid signs, marching and chanting slogans for health care and justice.  Madeline Schatz is the president of the Missouri State College Democrats.

“The Hawley race and the Claire race are very close. And we just feel it's kind of like our responsibility to try to bring people out and play a part in speaking their mind,” Schatz said.

Voters will decide who will hold the US Senate seat for another six years on Nov. 6.
