Students Prepare to Demonstrate for Stricter Gun Laws

Michele Skalicky

Local students are gearing up for SGF Walkout for our Lives this Friday, March 23.  Around 30 people gathered at Strong Hall on the MSU campus Sunday night to make signs.

"I'm an English education major so I plan on being in schools, and just given my own perspective as a future teacher, I can't imagine living somewhere where children should have to fear going to school--what should be one of, like, the safest places," said MSU student Hayley Werth who attended the sign-making event.

The city-wide school walkout will take place in the 10 o’clock hour Friday in response to the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead.

The walkout is being organized by Team Millennial, a breakout group of members of the Southwest Missouri chapter of the National Organization for Women.

The event Friday at area high schools and universities is meant to encourage lawmakers to enact common sense gun legislation.
