Springfield Police Department Seeks Young Applicants for Cadet Unit

Springfield Police Department

A program at the Springfield Police Department lets young people see what it takes to be a police officer and prepares them for a career in law enforcement.  Applications are now being accepted for the Cadet Unit.  It’s a volunteer operational unit that not only serves young people but also helps supplement the resources of the department, according to a news release from the City of Springfield.

Newly appointed cadet recruits receive comprehensive training in things like physical fitness and nutrition, defensive tactics and firearms safety through the Springfield Police Cadet Academy.  Recruits must satisfactorily complete the academy and attend at least 85 percent of the academy training September 20th through December 1st.

After they graduate from the academy, cadets receive hands-on training.  They’re required to fulfill at least four hours of service to the department each month helping with things like the Ozark Empire Fair, dignitary visits and parades.

A cadet in good standing for three years is required to have only 30 accredited college hours instead of the 60 when applying to be a Springfield police officer.

Requirements Include:

  • Be at least 16 years of age upon completion of the Cadet Academy, but have not reached your 20th birthday at the time of application
  • Be attending high school and maintaining a 2.5 grade point average or have a high school diploma or the equivalent or have a G.E.D.
  • Possess a valid Missouri driver's license or obtain one by the time of appointment
  • Be able to pass a background investigation
  • Possess no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions
  • Have a desire for a career in law enforcement or a public safety occupation
  • Be free from any mental or physical disabilities that would prevent employment as an officer by the Springfield Police Department

Applications are due July 17th.
