Part of a major roadway in the area will close down for the weekend. Michele Skalicky reports.
You'll want to plan ahead this weekend if your usual route includes driving on I-44 at Highway 65. Construction work will require that section of interstate to be closed for up to 52 hours. Bob Edwards is spokesman for MODOT.
He says Highway 65 will remain open, but northbound traffic will use the southbound bridge over I-44, so it will be one lane in each direction.
Edwards says there's a number of diversion routes they plan to use.
He says they expect heavier than normal traffic on city streets because of the closing. MODOT will have workers stationed at many locations in the area, and law enforcement personnel will also help keep traffic moving.
The interstate will close at one minute past midnight tonight, and the contractor has until 4:30 Monday morning to open it back up. The estimated completion date for the $25 million I-44/65 interchange reconstruction project is spring of 2008.
