Missouri State University President Clif Smart earned high marks by the Board of Governors during his recent annual performance evaluation.

Smart presented his self-assessment at the board’s annual summer retreat in June. It was followed by an electronic survey that each board member completed assessing Smart’s performance in nine major categories.

“Members of the Board of Governors independently evaluated President Smart, but were consistent in their agreement that his performance was extraordinary,” said Board Chair Virginia Fry in a statement. “The evaluation results reflect the Board’s confidence that President Smart is the right person to lead the university through the challenges ahead.”

In acknowledging his strong performance, the board accelerated the vesting scheduled for Smart’s deferred compensation plan. This came in lieu of a salary increase, which the president asked he not receive because the university is unable to offer an across the board increase this year for employees.

“I am gratified by the Board’s support,” Smart said. “Together, we have accomplished some great things at the university in the last six years. I look forward to working with the Board, our leadership team, and faculty, staff, and students to build on this good work for many years to come.”

Smart, who assumed the president’s role in 2012, joined Missouri State as general counsel in 2007.
