You have a chance to learn about the political issues facing Islamic women around the globe this evening when Dr. Merve Kavakci presents a lecture entitled "Global Reverberations of Islamic Women."

Kavakci is a Professor at George Washington University and will speak tonight at 6:30 in the Drury Diversity Center in Springfield.

She says she'll cover a variety of topics.

Kavakci found herself in the middle of a major controversy in her home country of Turkey when she was elected to represent Istanbul in the Turkish parliament in 1999. She was not seated in parliament because she wears the traditional Islamic headscarf. She explains why her headscarf was a problem in Turkey.

The case attracted international attention...Kavakci took her case to the European Court of Human Rights and won last year. Her case contributed to the move by the Turkish parliament this year to relax some restrictions on religious expressions in the country. Kavakci will talk about her experiences and will take questions from the audience. She explains what she hopes people here in Springfield will take away from tonight's presentation.

Kavakci's presentation entitled "Global Reverberations of Islamic Women" is tonight at 6:30 in the Drury Diversity Center in Springfield.
