The Missouri Department of Transportation says improvements it's made recently as well as others that are planned will help save motorists money on fuel costs. Michele Skalicky reports.

HIGHWAY SOUND

IT'S NO BIG NEWS—GAS IS EXPENSIVE THESE DAYS. AND THE MORE YOU DRIVE, THE MORE MONEY YOU HAVE TO FORK OVER FOR FUEL.

BUT OFFICIALS WITH THE MISSOURI DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAY WHEN THEIR BETTER ROADS, BRIGHTER FUTURE PROGRAM IS COMPLETE IN 5 YEARS, MOTORISTS SHOULD SAVE MONEY ON FUEL COSTS.

SALLY OXENHANDLER IS A SPOKESPERSON FOR MODOT

SHE SAYS, NOT ONLY WILL MODOT MAKE ROADS LESS BUMPY THRU ITS NEXT PROGRAM--BETTER ROADS, BRIGHTER FUTURE--IT WILL ALSO ADD AND PAVE SHOULDERS ON MISSOURI HIGHWAYS. THAT, OXENHANDLER SAYS, WILL MAKE TRAVEL SAFER.

AND, BESIDES SAVING MONEY ON GASOLINE DUE TO THE INCREASED FUEL EFFICIENCY, SHE SAYS MOTORISTS' REPAIR COSTS SHOULD DROP, TOO

BUT IT COSTS MONEY TO SAVE MONEY. THE BETTER ROADS, BRIGHTER FUTURE PROGRAM HAS A PRICE TAG OF 1.1 BILLION DOLLARS.
