A new performance space is being planned at Nathanael Greene-Close Memorial Park. The Springfield Sister Cities Association, Friends of the Garden and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board are partnering to build a pavilion—an outdoor amphitheater designed for cultural performances and events.
The Peace Through People Pavilion will be built this summer just east of the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center. It will include a covered band shell powered for stage lighting and amplified sound, and it will have capacity for around 500 patrons using lawn chairs and blankets on the grass.
According to the City of Springfield, the space will be used for special events hosted by the SCCA and Friends of the Garden as well as community reservations through the Park Board.
SSCA president Michael Thomas said their board believes they’ve chosen “an ideal location to build upon our success in creating more cultural opportunities for the community.”
The project will be funded with private donations and a $5,000 grant administered by the Springfield Regional Arts Council on behalf of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. And the Tom and Kay Finnie Endowment Fund has been established at the CFO for long-term maintenance of the pavilion.
Constructed is expected to be finished by fall.
