'A Place at the Table' Documentary Screenings in Springfield This Week
The documentary film A Place at the Table will be shown three times this week in the Springfield area as part of Food Day Celebration 2013. The film follows three working-class American families as they struggle to keep food on the table. As KSMU’s Julie Greene reports, the screenings will include a food drive for the hungry in our community.
National Food Day Celebration is a grassroots, healthy food campaign to teach Americans about healthy food choices and to change food policies. Across the country, the celebration takes place on October 24. But here in Springfield, Food Day Celebration is four months long, beginning in July and ending this week.
The celebration is a part of the local non-profit organization FoodCORE, and some of its sponsors are the Healthy Living Alliance and CoxHealth.

“I don’t think everybody in the community understands what real food is. More often than we realize, people eat out of boxes that come from a long list of ingredients that you can’t pronounce, and that is suspect for health. What we’re trying to do is educate everybody on what real food is that is healthier for you and is grown from the ground,” Claybaker said.
A Place at the Table will be shown on Tuesday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. at CoxHealth’s Foster Auditorium on the Cox South campus, and Thursday, October 24 at 6:00 p.m. at the Pickwick House, 607 South Pickwick. Drury University will also screen the movie Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in the Lay Hall Auditorium.
According to the 2013 Missouri Hunger Atlas, about one quarter of Greene County households with children aren’t sure where they will get their next meal.
Glenda Miller is an advanced practice nurse at CoxHealth. She also represents the Healthy Food Pantry Collaborative.
“As a community, we don’t want children and families going to bed hungry. For those that need to use the pantry during times when things aren’t going as well for them, they need to have options of healthy things as well as things that satisfy. The goal would be to collect as much as we can and to keep the donations going to the food pantries. Five dollars does a ton of good,” Miller said.
Items on the food drive wish list include no sugar-added applesauce, egg noodles and corn tortillas, soy or almond milk, and many other items. For a more detailed list, visit their website www.fooddaycelebration.org.
