Presidential Campaigns Mobilizing Support in Missouri Ahead of Primary

In less than a week, Missouri Primary voters will decide who they want as the presidential nominee for both the Republican and the Democratic parties.

Both parties have been active in southwest Missouri in recent weeks and will continue efforts through March 15, the day of the primary. The Greene County Democrats have been busy getting polling information out to their voters, according to executive director Skyler Johnston.

“So, what we’ve been doing is mainly doing as much education as we possibly can, making sure that folks know where to vote, when to vote and any kind of procedures that they may need.”

Johnston said that coalitions for both candidates are at work in southwest Missouri. A Springfield coalition for Bernie Sanders, called Springfield Area for Bernie, has been active raising support. Springfield Area for Bernie is part of a statewide coalition called Show Me Bernie.

“They’re kind of spreading the love as much as they can, getting the word out for Bernie both near and far.”

As for Hillary Clinton’s campaign team, Johnson said that has been more subdued locally. Campaign representatives have held phone banks informing Clinton supporters when and where to vote.

As for the Republicans, the party’s chair for Greene County, Danette Proctor, says Ted Cruz has “boots on the ground.” Cruz’s campaign been the most active presence for the GOP in the area, she says.

“When you see boots on the ground and people out there working, making phone calls, those bring in the votes. Cruz has very active volunteers doing that right now in Greene County.”

Proctor said the Greene County Republican Party will host a watch party on March 15 at Classic Rock Coffee, located at 1900 W. Sunset St. That watch party begins at 6 p.m.

A separate watch party, held by Ted Cruz for President 2016, will take place at 5 p.m. at 424 N. Cedarbrook Ave.

Polls across the state will open at 6 a.m. on March 15 and will close at 7 p.m. Greene County residents can find polling locations and other detailshere. Citizens throughout the state can find their polling place through the Secretary of State’s officewebsite or your local election authority.
