The search for a new president at Missouri State University will get underway soon. The university's Board of Governors held a teleconference meeting Tuesday to discuss how to go about finding the university's next top administrator. Michael Nietzel announced last month he will resign next year. KSMU’s Matt Evans was at Tuesday's meeting and has more.
As several members of the Missouri State Board of Governors gathered around the conference table in Carrington Hall, President Michael Nietzel watched them begin their conversations about how to carry out the search for his replacement. Citing personal and professional reasons, Nietzel announced on November 2, he would step down by December 31, 2010. Brian Hammons is Chair of the Board of Governors.“Selecting a president is one of the most important roles of the governing board. I think people understand that and are taking it very seriously.”Hammons says Missouri State Governor Michael Duggan will be asked to chair the search committee. Hammons and Duggan had some ideas about how to conduct the search and discussed them with the board. Among other things, board members discussed who should serve on the search committee and how much time the search should take. The proposed committee would consist of three governors, two students, four faculty members, one academic administrator, two staff members, one representative from the administrative council, and two alumni or community members. According to the proposed timeline, the new president would be announced in June of 2010. Several members of the Board of Governors said the June date was too ambitious. There was also debate over the make up of the committee. And the board discussed the use of an outside search firm. Hammons said this meeting was basically a brainstorming session on how to begin the search, but by the board’s next meeting on December 18, the search committee and a projected timeline will be in place.For KSMU News, I’m Matt Evans.
