As colder weather descends on the Ozarks, the Missouri Department of Transportation is gearing up for the really nasty winter weather that can snarl traffic and close roadways.

Sandy Hentges is outreach coordinator for MODOT.

Removing snow and ice from state highways is a pricey proposition.

Hentges says it costs the state millions of dollars each year.

In deciding which roads to clear first, Hentges says MODOT focuses on the busiest roads.

Hentges says while MODOT is preparing for winter weather, drivers should do their part.

She recommends you keep a flashlight, blankets, and non-perishable food in your car or truck.

Hentges says it's also important to remember to drive defensively around MODOT's snow plows.
