President Bush today announced his new choice for treasury secretary: John W. Snow, chairman of the nation's largest railroad. Snow will now become the leading figure on the president's economic policy team, replacing Paul O'Neill, who was forced out last week. NPR's White House correspondent Don Gonyea reports.

Robert Siegel speaks with Robert Dallek, a history professor at Boston University, about Storm Thurmond's 1948 presidential run on the Dixiecrat ticket. Last Thursday at Thurmond's 100th birthday celebration, Senate GOP Leader Trent Lott said that if Thurmond had been elected president, "...we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years."

NATO's Transformation Summit
President Bush today traveled from Prague to St. Petersburg, Russia, for the close of NATO's transformation summit. This is the first time a meeting of all NATO leaders was held behind the old Iron Curtain. Yesterday the Atlantic alliance invited seven East European countries into its ranks. Today's proceedings focused on NATO's relations with Russia. NPR's Guy Raz is in Prague.
