High Court Considers Double Jeopardy
NPR's Nina Totenberg previews the arguments in the capital punishment case the US Supreme Court hears today. The Justices will consider whether the double jeopardy clause of the Constitution applies to the penalty phase of a capital trial. In his first trial, the defendant in today's case was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. On appeal, he was re-tried, convicted again, and sentenced to death. His lawyers argue that the ban on double jeopardy should have prevented the second jury from even considering the death penalty.

Close Minn. Senate Race Readies for Debate
NPR's David Welna reports from St. Paul that all eyes are on Minnesota's senate race, where White House-backed Republican Norm Coleman is being challenged by former vice president Walter Mondale. Mondale stepped in to lead a speedy campaign after Minnesota Democratic senator Paul Wellstone died in a plane crash. Coleman has retooled his campaign to opposed Mondale, and polls are unclear on who leads this tight race. Both men are expected to flex their eligibility at today's debate.

Schwarzenegger Training for California Politics
NPR's Ina Jaffe reports the most appealing candidate in California is better known for his action packed movies than his political views. Although Arnold Schwarzenegger is not currently running for office, he is sponsoring an initiative for the November 5th ballot that could make after-school programs available to many students in the state. Some say Schwarzenegger is training for a chance to be governor in four years.

Machines Replace Christmas Workers at UPS
The main sorting center for United Parcel Service in Louisville, Kentucky, won't be hiring seasonal workers this year. Host, Bob Edwards, explains a machine is expected to handle increased demand without more workers. Before Christmas, the company makes an addition four to five million deliveries.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he'll agree to become foreign minister in a right wing coalition government, but only if Prime Minister Ariel Sharon calls early elections. NPR News reports.
