Baby Giraffe Born this Week at Dickerson Park Zoo

Dickerson Park Zoo

Dickerson Park Zoo welcomed a new baby giraffe Monday.  The female calf is approximately 6 and a half feet tall and weighs around 150 pounds.  Zoo veterinarian, Dr. Rodney Schnellbacher says the calf is nursing well and has already had her first physical.  He says both the baby and mom are doing well.

The yet-to-be-named giraffe joins mom, Emma, and three other females and one male giraffe at Dickerson Park Zoo.  The baby is on exhibit.

“Globally, the giraffe population is declining with estimates of less than 80,000 remaining in the wild,” said zoo spokeswoman Joey Powell. She encourages zoo guests to get a close up look on the giraffe deck, "connect with these beautiful animals and learn more about efforts to protect giraffes worldwide.”

Dickerson Park Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $12 for ages 13 and up, $8 for children 3-12 and free for age two and younger.
