Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library’s Fall Book Sale continues Friday (10/18) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday (10/19) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday (10/20) from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds E-Plex.  It’s cash or check only. 

The Historic Gillioz Theatre presents “An Evening with Branford Marsalis” Friday night (10/18) at 8. 

The Discovery Center of Springfield will host the Science Sprouts program, “Three Little Pigs Architecture,” Friday morning (10/18) at 10:30.  It’s for kids six and younger.  

The Fifth Annual Red Shoe Gala to benefit Ronald McDonald House of the Ozarks will be held Friday night (10/18) at 6:30 at the White River Conference Center with a performance by Jake Simpson. 

Harvest Fest continues through October 27 on weekends at Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park, 3825 W. Farm Rd. 146 in Springfield.  The event features a corn maze, the Haunted Trail, a pumpkin patch, inflatables, carnival games and more.  Hours Saturdays are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 6. 

The Joplin & Springfield Railway will hostfree Halloween ridesFriday and Saturday (10/18-10/19) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 1101 N. Airport Blvd. in Springfield. 

The Missouri Women’s Hockey Showcase will be at Jordan Valley Ice Park Friday through Sunday (10/18-10/20).  Admission is $7 a day. 

The 32nd Annual Sparta Persimmon Days Festivalis Friday and Saturday (10/18-10/19) in Roller Park in Sparta. 

Apple Butter Makin’ Days is Friday through Sunday (10/18-10/20) in downtown Mt. Vernon.  It features craft booths, carnival rides, food, live entertainment and apple butter. 

The Missouri State University Volleyball Bears will host Indiana State Friday night (10/18) at 6 and Evansville Saturday night (10/19) at 6 at Hammons Student Center. 

The Drury men’s soccer team will host Bellarmine Friday afternoon (10/18) at 1:30 and Indianapolis Sunday afternoon (10/20) at 2:30 at Curry Sports Complex in Springfield. 

The Drury women’s soccer team will host Bellarmine Friday morning (10/18) at 11 and Indianapolis Sunday (10/20) at noon at Curry Sports Complex in Springfield. 

The 2019 Annual Springfield Rock, Gem and Mineral Show is Saturday (10/19) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday (10/20) from 10 to 4:30 at the Springfield Expo Center, 635 E. St. Louis. 

Pets and Pumpkins is from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday (10/19) on Park Central Square in Springfield.  Entry is $2 per person and pet. 

Celebrate Smokey Bear's 75th birthday at an event Saturday (10/19) at Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield.  Events are free with zoo admission.  

The Springfield Walk Like MADD and 5K Dash 2019 will be held Saturday (10/19) at Jordan Valley Park to raise money for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. 

The Gillioz Theatre presents“Kindred Spirits Behind the Hauntings: An Intimate Evening with Amy Bruni and Adam Berry"Saturday night (10/19) at 8.  The paranormal investigators will shed light on cases they’ve worked on and reveal intimate, behind-the-scenes accounts of their investigations. 

The Missouri State women’s soccer team will host Northern Indiana Saturday afternoon (10/18) at 1 at Allison Stadium South. 

The fourth annual Traditional Chinese Dance Show is Saturday night (10/18) at 7 in the MSU Plaster Student Union Theatre. 

The Shoal Creek Conservation Education Center in Joplin will host a fall hike for families Saturday morning (10/19) at 9.  Registration is required. 

Kids 12 to 17-years-old are invited to the Conservation TEENS program, “Archery for Beginners,”Saturday morning (10/19) at 9.  Registration is required. 

The program,“Beginning Archery for Families,” will start at 1 p.m. Saturday (10/19) at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center.  Registration is required. 

Ozarks Bacon Fest is Saturday (10/19) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds.  It’s a 21 and over event.  Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door.

The Rainbow Network will host “Night for Nicaragua: Through the Decades Benefit Night” Saturday night (10/19) at 6 at the Tower Club. 

The Sixth Annual Ozark Mountain Highland Games will be held Saturday (10/19) at American Legion Post 639, 2660 S. Scenic in Springfield. 

The Springfield Symphony presents “From the New World” Saturday night (10/19) at 7:30 at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts. 

Abou Ben Adhem Cruisers will host Spooktoberfest Saturday (10/19) at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield.  Doors open at 5:30.  Admission is $25/couple or $15/person. 

The 32nd Annual Wine and Food Celebration to benefit children’s programming on Ozarks Public Television is Sunday (10/19) from 2 to 5 at the White River Conference Center in Springfield.

The MSU Chorale will givea concert Sunday night (10/19) at 5:30 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1115 N. Campbell in Springfield.  Admission is free. 

Gigs in the Garden is Sunday afternoon (10/20) at 2 at the Peace Through People Pavilion at Nathanael Greene-Close Memorial Park, 2400 S. Scenic in Springfield.  The concert will feature medieval and Spanish Blues by Claude Bourbon.  Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.  Take blankets and lawn chairs. 

Michele Skalicky has worked at KSMU since the station occupied the old white house at National and Grand. She enjoys working on both the announcing side and in news and has been the recipient of statewide and national awards for news reporting. She likes to tell stories that make a difference. Michele enjoys outdoor activities, including hiking, camping and leisurely kayaking.
