Missouri Health Department Pauses Use Of J&J Vaccine In The State, Issues Statement

KSMU - Ozarks Public Radio

The State of Missouri is pausing the use of the Johnson & Johnson Janssen COVID-19 vaccine until further notice.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control recommended a pause in the vaccineearly Tuesday after six women developed a rare and dangerous blood clot after receiving it.

The state health department issued a statement that said they decided to stop distributing the vaccine in Missouri out of “an abundance of caution and per federal guidelines.”

Dr. Randall Williams, the director of DHSS, said they expect to have more information soon “to make further decisions about overall vaccine distribution in light of this new development.”  He said they’ll continue to update citizens who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after the advisory committee meets at the federal level tomorrow.

Those who have received the J&J vaccine and who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath within three weeks after the vaccine should contact their healthcare provider, according to the statement. They may also call the state’s COVID-19 hotline at 877-435-8411.

The health department is asking physicians to keep any on-hand J&J vaccine in an appropriate storage unit and label it “quarantine-do not use” until further notice.
