Veterans Day this year will be subdued due to global pandemic, but a Springfield American Legion Post is getting creative.
Parades, complimentary breakfasts at restaurants, and celebrations with family and friends. That’s how the Ozarks region has celebrated Veterans Day in years past.
But Ann Humphreys, the general manager at American Legion Post 676 in Springfield, says the COVID-19 pandemic upended their routine. Normally veterans stop by the post to socialize and get support from the community. But Humphreys says the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced the post’s income and they’ve had to tighten their belt this year.
“It puts a damper on so many of the charities that we like to support this time of year. So we’re just going to struggle through it like everybody else,” she told KSMU.
Humphreys says the American Legion can still hold veterans meetings with precautions like social distancing in place. She says everyone at the post is masked except some older veterans with health conditions.
