May 22, 2011, an EF-5 tornado slammed into Joplin, destroying a large section of the town and leaving 161 people dead.  As the 10th anniversary nears, KSMU remembers by sharing a montage of stories that aired on the station shortly after the storm.

Joplin Proud will host a ceremony Saturday, May 22, to observe the 10-year anniversary of the tornado.  It will start at 5 p.m. at Cunningham Park.  Jay Nixon, who was Missouri governor at the time of the storm, will be a guest speaker.  The Joplin Memorial Marathon will also be held Friday and Saturday.

Michele Skalicky has worked at KSMU since the station occupied the old white house at National and Grand. She enjoys working on both the announcing side and in news and has been the recipient of statewide and national awards for news reporting. She likes to tell stories that make a difference. Michele enjoys outdoor activities, including hiking, camping and leisurely kayaking.
