Congressman Roy Blunt held a telephone press conference with local media for the first time since becoming House Majority Leader earlier this week. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

Congressman Roy Blunt held a telephone press conference with local media for the first time since becoming House Majority Leader earlier this week.

Blunt, who had been serving as Majority Whip stepped into the position after a Texas grand jury indicted Congressman Tom DeLay for alleged criminal conspiracy to circumvent state campaign finance laws.

House rules required DeLay to step down from his leadership post as Majority Leader after he was indicted.

Speaking by phone from Washington D-C, Blunt said his new position will benefit his constituents.

Initial reports from Washington this week indicated another Republican lawmaker, David Dreier of California would step in temporarily as Majority Leader.

Blunt denies that Dreier was the first choice of House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Congressman David Dreier will help House Majority Leader Roy Blunt with some of his new duties.
