For the next two and a half weeks, 38 newly elected state lawmakers are traveling the state as part of the freshmen orientation tour. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

FRESHMEN ORIENTATION BEGINS THIS WEEK IN JEFFERESON CITY WHERE NEWLY ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES LEARN EVERYTHING FROM THE LOCATION OF THE BATHROOMS IN THE CAPITOL BUILDING TO THE PROCESS OF PUTTING TOGETHER THE STATE BUDGET.

AMONG THE 38 NEWLY ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES IS SARA LAMPE, A DEMOCRAT FROM CENTRAL SPRINGFIELD.

SPEAKING ON HER CELL PHONE FROM THE STATE CAPITOL, SHE SAYS THE FRESHMEN ORIENTATION IS LIKE GOING AWAY TO COLLEGE.

LAMPE SAYS THE STAFF IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HAS PUT TOGETHER INFORMATIVE SESSIONS FOR FRESHMEN WHO NEED TO KNOW ABOUT A WIDE-RANGE OF ISSUES.

AND AS THE FRESHMEN TOUR MOVES FROM THE STATE CAPITOL TO OTHER PARTS OF THE STATE, MANY INSTITUTIONS, BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE WILL DO THEIR BEST TO IMPRESS NEWLY ELECTED LAWMAKERS.

THIS WEEK, THE FRESHMEN TOUR COMES TO SPRINGFIELD AND THE CAMPUS OF SOUTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY.

UNIVERSITY OFFICIALS SAY THE FRESHMEN LEGISLATIVE TOUR IS AN IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY FOR NEWLY ELECTED LAWMAKERS TO LEARN ABOUT S-M-S AND THE SCHOOL'S AGENDA FOR THE UPCOMING SESSION.

JIM BAKER IS THE ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT AT S-M-S.

BAKER SAYS SOME NEWLY ELECTED LEGISLATORS FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE STATE HAVE NEVER VISITED THE S-M-S CAMPUS.

DURING THEIR STOP AT S-M-S, THE FRESHMEN LAWMAKERS WILL EAT AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY.

BAKER SAYS THE GOAL IS TO AVOID OVERWHELMING THE NEWLY-ELECTED RERPESENTATIVES.

BESIDES LEARNING ABOUT INSTITUTIONS LIKE S-M-S THAT RECEIVE STATE FUNDING, THE FRESHMEN LAWMAKERS WILL ALSO BE LEARNING MORE ABOUT EACH OTHER.

REPRESENTATIVE-ELECT SARA LAMPE OF SPRINGFIELD SAYS THAT'S AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE ORIENTATION.

THE FRESHMEN TOUR WILL COST TAXPAYERS BUT PART OF THE TAB WILL BE PICKED UP BY LOBBYISTS.
