Possible Freeze over the Weekend

As temperatures continue to drop again, there is a chance for frost in Southwestern Missouri that could impact spring foliage.

Mark Birchfield is meteorologist for the National Weather Service forecast Office in Springfield, MO.

“Tonight will be the first of several nights where we could see temperatures below freezing.”

According to Birchfield, rain today will end overnight and then the skies will clear towards the morning hours. Unfortunately, this weather pattern does not bode well for spring gardens.

“That’s going to allow us to get below freezing for enough time to probably cause some impact to outdoor vegetation” says Birchfield.

He says it would probably be a good idea to cover up plants tonight.

The freezing weather overnight will mostly affect Springfield and areas to the West, according to Birchfield, while the weather the rest of the weekend will spread out, “where’ll you’ll probably have the same (weather) more region-wide” according to Birchfield.

After this bout of freezing weather,

Birchfield says next week we will have warmer temperatures and possibly more rain towards the middle of the week.
