Tim Stout, a guidance counselor from Billings School District received the 2005 Earth Hero Award. KSMU's Christy Hendricks reports.

The Dickerson Park Zoo and Friends of the Zoo, a non-profit organization that supports Dickerson Park Zoo, named Tim Stout, a guidance counselor for the Billings School District, as its 2005 Earth Hero.

Melinda Mancuso is the Public Relations Director for Friends of the Zoo.

She says Tim Stout deserves the award because he has made an impact at Billings by establishing a recycling program.

Tim Stout says he was surprised to be nominated by a co-worker and feels honored by the award.

He says he started a recycling program at the Billings School District seven years ago and has had a good response from students and teachers.

Stout says he also teaches students the proper way sort and recycle items.

He says recycling is like keeping a room clean.

As part of the 2005 Earth Hero Award, Friends of the Zoo will make a contribution to Ozarks Greenways in Stout's name and Stout receives a one-year Friends of the Zoo membership.
