Those who say the new MO Health Net bill won't help the neediest of Missourians gathered Monday to share their stories. KSMU's Michele Skalicky reports.
Not everyone is happy with Missouri's new healthcare system for the poor. Missouri Pro-Vote and those impacted by the Medicaid cuts in 2005 gathered Monday to oppose MO Health Net.
They say the new law effectively makes the Medicaid cuts a permanent reality to the sickest and most vulnerable populations in Springfield and across the state of Missouri.
Richard Green was affected by the cuts. The single father of three is in a wheelchair due to multiple sclerosis. He says, in order to be covered under MO Health Net, he'd have to pay $630 per month, which is half of his disability check, and he can't afford that
Representative Charlie Norr, a democrat from Springfield, voted against the MO Health Net bill
According to Norr, Missouri's Medicaid money now goes to other states, and Missouri is now considered a donor state.
More than 100,000 Missourians lost most of their Medicaid coverage in an overhaul of the program in 2005. Norr believes MO Health Net benefits very few additional people.
