Springfield Fire Department Offers Escape Ladders to Residents in Zones 1 and 2

Michele Skalicky

A new program funded by a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant, is aimed at keeping Springfield residents in Zones 1 and 2 safe.

The Springfield Fire Department says it’s offering 50 First Alert fire escape ladders to people in those zones, located in northwest and northeast Springfield, who live in multi-level homes.

In order to receive a ladder, residents in Zones 1 or 2 must complete a home escape plan with the fire department.

According to the department, the ladders are compact and simple to store and offer a way to escape if a door or stairway is blocked during a fire.  They’re tested to hold more than 1000 pounds.

Fire and Life Safety educator, Heather Parker, says everyone should have working smoke alarms in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.  Create and practice a home escape plan at least twice a year.  Know at least two ways out of every room.  Have an outside meeting place.  And teach children to escape on their own.  If there’s a fire, close doors behind you as you leave.

If you’re interested in receiving a ladder, call 417-874-2380.
