The Gardening Hotline began in Greene County in 1982, and Master Gardeners answer more than 2000 calls each year.

Trained volunteers answer questions about a variety of topics from the University of Missouri Extension Center at the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center.  Master Gardener Terry Newport volunteered on the hotline for a decade and says she answered questions about almost everything…

"But some of my favorites are, 'how do I get rid of the moles in my front yard?'  Let's see, anything about grass, you know, when to fertilize, how high to cut it, mulch, insects galore and diseases of your vegetables.  Tomatoes always have a multiple of calls on the diseases that they produce every year, you know, it's never ending and always exciting," she said.

Newport says sometimes they get stumped, but they take callers’ names and numbers, do some research and get back with them.

Master Gardener hotlines are also available through the MU Extension Centers in Christian, Taney, Stone and Jasper Counties, but hours may vary.

The Master Gardeners of Greene County Hotline is open each business day through October from 9 to 4.  The number is 881-8909, ext. 320.
