Beginning January 25, Volunteer Income Tax Assistant, or “VITA” sites in Stone and Taney Counties will offer free tax preparation for low to moderate income individuals. KSMU’s Justin Lux reports.
Taxpayers whose incomes are less than $48,000 are eligible to have their taxes prepared for free by trained IRS volunteers.
Annette FitzGerald is a family financial education specialist for the Taney County MU extension office.
She said ultimately, the tax centers hope to allow low-income people to claim the earned income credit they are eligible for, and that it sometimes is as much as several thousand dollars for a family.
Those seeking tax help will be asked to provide social security cards for each dependent, W-2 forms from all employers, as well as proof of interest income, unemployment compensation income, and paperwork for child care or tuition expenses.
To set an appointment at the Taney County VITA sites, you can call 888-504-0443.The number for the Stone County VITA sites is 272-8508.
