Wintry weather is blanketing much of the Ozarks today. KSMU's Missy Shelton reports.

Shelton: I just spoke with Brian Barjenbruch, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Springfield to learn more about what to expect throughout the day.

Barjenbuch: The first batch of precipitation are moving off to the east of the Springfield area but at the same time, we have re-development back into northeastern Oklahoma and this is continuing to move across Southwest Missouri to give us intermittent freezing rain. This should last in the Springfield area through noon.

Shelton: What can we expect in the afternoon? Any clearing at all?

Barjenbruch: Actually, the afternoon won't be clearing much at all. We do expect some additional development throughout the afternoon. We have a winter storm warning in effect through midnight, with the possibility of continued ice, sleet and possibly some snow accumulation.

Shelton: It's difficult to tell what kind of precipitation we're seeing. So, I was wondering what kind of precipitation we have been seeing today.

Barjenbruch: We've actually had a strange combination of sleet and freezing rain. Right now, we're at all freezing rain. But in the middle, we were at a heavy sleet. In the beginning, we started with freezing rain. It's been a mix and transitions at times depending on the exact conditions of the lower portions of the atmosphere. For the next couple of hours at least, we can expect predominantly freezing rain but we will have some sleet mixed in.

Shelton: You mentioned the possibility of some snow accumulation. What's the latest on that?

Barjenbruch: By the end of the event, we expect a cold front push through behind the low pressure system. This will act to cool the entire portion of the atmosphere which will allow us to have some pretty good snow, maybe 1-2 inches in the Springfield area.
