Each year, area residents have a chance to do something good with their live Christmas tree after the holidays are over rather than just throwing it away. Michele Skalicky tells us how we can use our trees to help fish.
When Christmas is over and you're ready to take down your live tree, don't throw it away—recycle it. The 21st annual Bass Pro Shops Christmas Tree Fish Habitat Program gets underway Wednesday (12/26).
Trees, with stands and decorations removed, can be dropped off in the northwest corner of the parking lot behind Bass Pro on S. Campbell thru New Year's Day from noon to 6.
The trees will end up in Table Rock Lake in the Cape Fair area. Bass Pro spokesman Larry Whiteley explains how the trees will benefit both fish and anglers.
The Missouri Department of Conservation has developed a web-based interactive fish habitat map for Table Rock Lake. To find out more, go to www.mdc.mo.gov.
The Christmas Tree Fish Habitat Program also serves as a fundraiser for area Boy Scouts.
Since the Christmas Tree Fish Habitat Program began 21 years ago, more than 240,000 trees have been recycled.
