With films, music, storytelling and dance, the curtural history of the Ozarks was brought to life September 10-12 at SMSU's Ozarks Celebration Festival. Mike Smith has the story:
The 7th annual Ozarks Celebration Fesstival was deemed by organizers a success, as the 3 day event was winding down Sunday.
From a pre-historical perspective given to those who stopped by the SMSU Centert for Archaeological Research booth, to demonstrations of spinning and weaving, blacksmithing, wood carving, and barrel making, the festival served as an entertaining and informative forum for highlighting the historical and curtural aspects of life in the Ozarks.
Barb Jones, SMSU's College of Arts and Letters Events Coordinator, says she's pleased with the number of visitors who came to campus for the event. She says SMS security officials estimate over 10,000 people attended the festival on Saturday and Sunday, with another 1,800 here for the Friday night kick-off concert featuring Hogmolly and Big Smith at the Strong Hall Amphitheater.
SMSU President Dr. John Keiser says one of the main reasons SMS hosts the event is to give students who are not from the Ozarks a "Sense of place" and a knowldge about what the Ozarks was and is all about.
