The program is designed to support and strengthen the university's statewide mission in public affairs.

Our weekly program, Missouri State Journal, is a collaboration between KSMU Radio and Missouri State University. It's hosted and produced by MSU's Office of Strategic Communication, and it airs each Tuesday morning at 9:45 on KSMU.

In 1995, Missouri State University was granted a statewide mission in public affairs, defined by Senate Bill 340.

This mission, which centers on three pillars – ethical leadership, cultural competence and community engagement – is a defining element of its institutional identity and educational philosophy.

It also distinguishes Missouri State’s education from other universities and aims to prepare students not just for careers, but for responsible citizenship and civic engagement. To further support and strengthen its public affairs mission, the university will begin offering its new Undergraduate Certificate in Public Affairs this fall.

Dr. Suzanne Walker-Pacheco, professor of anthropology at Missouri State, who oversees the program, goes into detail about it and why it was created.
