Maned Wolf Pup, Born at Dickerson Park Zoo in January, is a Girl

Dickerson Park Zoo

One day after Dickerson Park Zoo had to euthanize its female Malayan Tiger, Petra, it has announced the birth of a maned wolf pup, born on January 4.

The female pup received its exam and vaccinations Wednesday.  The mom, Elvera, and baby are off exhibit.  The pup was recently introduced to its father, Diego.

Maned wolves are native to South America and are critically endangered.  They are included in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, according to Dickerson Park Zoo, and there continues to be a lot of research done by AZA zoos on the species to help them in the wild.

Despite their name, genetics show the animals are not wolves but are, in fact, a distinct species.
