Deciphering Speech: It Sounds Easy

To extract information from recorded sound requires both analytical and technical tools. Steve Nunn should know; he was the branch head of the Speech Technologies Group for the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Pacific and spent thirty years working on the analysis of audio waveforms.

He put his degree in physics to good use as he helped develop platforms which can identify speakers, language and other pertinent information from audio gathered by the nation's military.   He stops by STEM Spots today to chat about his background, the projects he developed and new outreach activities he plans for students in the greater Springfield area.

Dr. David Cornelison has been working as an educator and scientist in Arizona and Missouri universities for the last 32 years. From 2010-2018, he was the head of the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science at Missouri State University. His research interests lie at the intersection of experimental condensed-matter physics and astrophysics, while his educational efforts have focused on outreach to the K-12 school system. Most of all, he believes in curiosity-driven learning in the sciences and all other fields.
